Our Story
Every piece made at Studebaker Metals begins the same way it always has, by hand. The brand was born in 2013, founded by Michael Studebaker (traditionally trained Metalsmith) and Alyssa Catalano (fashion marketing and design professional), forging metal cuff bracelets in his dad’s basement using tools that have already seen a lifetime of work. There was no physical storefront or real strategy, but the knowledge that hand- made means something. A few big orders came in, and things started to change. The basement became a Wilkinsburg warehouse, the warehouse became a workshop in Braddock, and a few years ago became our home in Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District.
You can find us at 3101 Smallman Street in Pittsburgh, PA.
Our storefront is open to the public, with a rotating selection of our hand- forged metal goods, and gifts that become a conversation before they become a possession. Our workshop is visible from the storefront, where you can watch our team of metalsmiths at work, and if you’re lucky - snag a tour of our die- striking and forging workshops. We are proud to offer metalsmithing workshops if something more immersive, educational, and hands- on is more your speed. We also offer free coffee and tea + love from our shop cat Peter.
Our workshop resides in the former plumbing and carpentry shop of Crucible Steel’s “Park Works” plant. Built in 1903, this plant produced specialty high-carbon tool steel, mostly intended for drill-rods. Having remained in uninterrupted industrial use since, it retains much of its original character. Whether through casual tours or our classes and workshops, we welcome visitors to enjoy a stunning example of Pittsburgh's industrial architecture in the context of our fascination with the long history of metalwork.
Pittsburgh's story has always been written in metal. The city became famous for producing the steel that built bridges, railroads, and skylines, but beneath that legacy was something even more enduring: generations of skilled hands who understood how raw material becomes something useful, beautiful, and built to last. Studebaker Metals is part of that tradition. Our workshop trades blast furnaces for anvils, assembly lines for hand tools, and mass production for intentional craftsmanship. We employ tools spanning three centuries, and source the purest materials in order to evoke a quality typical of days past. Hand- forged to last a lifetime, by our team of talented metalsmiths.
